Puffs Fresh Faces

Good morning everyone! As a few of you know, I am your local Boogie wipes/Saline ambassador. This means that the company sends me products, full sized and samples, to try and hand out. I am a very big supporter of the Boogie wipes brand. We were sick just a few weeks ago, and my nose cannot handle a regular tissue. So I stopped by Target with a coupon, and picked myself up a pack of boogie wipes.

Nothing soothes my nose like a natural saline wipe. Now we use Boogie wipes for a lot more than just noses and being sick. They work great for just about anything a wipe works for, but more gentle. Sticky hands and faces, allergies, dry noses. You name it, Boogie wipes help.

Now I am excited that Little Busy Bodies (Boogie wipes brand) has teamed up with Proctor and Gamble to bring us adults Puffs Fresh Faces! This is a product very similar to Boogie wipes, but there is so much more! I just used one of the wipes to remove some make up I had left over from last night, and boy, did it take it off easy and gentle. My face really did feel fresh.

I can't wait to try the other ones, especially the face and nose wipes with vicks.

"When we first developed Boogie Wipes in 2007, we knew saline worked wonders when it came to cleaning and soothing stuffy noses. We also knew saline had positive effects on the skin and ultimately wanted to tap into that knowledge when the time was right," said Julie Pickens, CEO of Little Busy Bodies, LLC. "Our partnership with P&G has really allowed us to build on the technology behind the use of saline for personal care and to realize our goal of taking moist saline wipes to the next level."

I am personally very excited, as this means there are more options available for adults and children alike.

When it comes to our personal journey to Urban Homesteading, meaning being a little more self sufficient, this doesn't mean we have to give up our luxuries. For me, saline wipes are a must to keep around the house. I will be stocking up a few for the winter especially as the cold and flu season will be much easier with a little extra help from soothing saline.

Need another reason to celebrate? How about a chance to win a trip to the spa from Puffs fresh faces? How about a 2 night, 3 day trip for two, with your choice of spa services?! Enter here for your chance!

Been behind lately

So how is everyone doing? I started this blog thinking I would write all the time, then pregnancy came along. I have been slacking.

Touching on urban homesteading, what does this mean to you? I believe personally it means relying less on things like grocery stores, being prepared for emergencies, and having a plan.

Things like toilet paper, paper towels, and other paper products, you can stockpile at rock bottom prices (use coupons too) to build a stock and not have to leave the house so often, therefore cutting some of the reliance on stores. If there is a power outage, or can't get to the store, will you be okay?

Just having a few extra items on hand can save you from the stress of having to do without.

With me right now, having extra items like diapers and wipes, can save me from having to run to the store in this heat. Being pregnant, I don't deal well with the heat at all. If I can avoid a trip to the store, I will take the opportunity.

Soft scrub review and give away!

Alright everyone, time for another give away!

Having the right cleaning supplies in your stockpile is very important. It helps you spend less on expensive brand names, keeps you home means less gas spent, and it's important to keep things clean for peace of mind and safety.

I tried it out on my sink today. I have to say it is runnier than I expected, so be careful. I squirted it all over the sink. But it took out some nasty water stains and goop my kids had dumped in. The sink has not looked this clean since we moved in! Other products tend to leave streaks.

This is one of the best products I have used on my sink in a very long time. However, it was a little strange. I tried it out on the bath tub and it took two scrubbing sessions to remove a water ring, but it is still lingering. So pretty tough on most stains, but the water ring was a little bit much for it. I think one more round should get it all the way gone, but for the price I won't complain. It's still a product that is fairly cheap compared to most brands, and it worked very well for just about everything I threw at it. Even the bath crayon that stained the side of the tub months ago.

All in all a good product for the money.
I am happy to say I will be keeping a few bottles around for my sink especially.

So who would like to add this to your stockpile for free?! Leave a comment and I will choose a winner, or winners, in 4 days. Let's get more entries so I can give more away!!!

Nice and sparkly with just a light ring left. Maybe if I leave it to soak next time it will do better. Plus I have super sensitive skin, and when I leaned my arm in it, no reaction. So if you have sensitive skin, this is a great product for you.

I got a chance to try out Soft scrub from Purex insiders. In no way are they affiliated with me and they did not influence my review. They sent me a sample and coupons to give out.

At home taco bell 5 layer burrito recipe

I think sometimes people forget that staying home, cooking and doing food storage, that you can make at home versions of just about anything. When you do urban homesteading, you try not to rely on the stores and going out all the time. I know a lot of people like to stop at fast food restaurants, so here is a nice recipe using food storage items. Food storage is not just dry ingredients, you can also store in the freezer. Things like meat and cheese. Stock up when it's on sale.

Remember, we call this blog SENSIBLE urban homesteading, not going off the grid, not eating wild foods, but at least planning for lean times using a stockpile and food storage. I feel that skills are necessary, but I feel it's important to spend time with my children and not panicking about the future. Just working towards being ready for anything. I personally believe in the 1 year food supply, but I will touch more on that later.

Here is the recipe I made today. Taco bell 5 layer burrito recipe for home.

Ingredients:
Shredded cheese
Cheesy chip dip- I used the actual taco bell brand, but you can use just about any.
Taco seasoning- optional to use the taco bell brand
Sour cream- optional to make it more authentic, but I don't like sour cream, so I leave it out.
Hamburger- Blended if you choose to make it smaller pieces
Refried beans. I usually make home versions but I was in a bit of a hurry to make lunch before   the kids went to nap. Home made versions are really easy. Just take pinto beans (dried) and powder them in the blender. Add a little hot water, season with garlic and other seasonings of your choice, and cook until it is a paste. Or you can also cook the beans first and then mash/blend and season.

Please ignore my date stamp. It's a day behind and I forgot to turn it off anyway.

Cook up your hamburger until it's nice and brown
Spread some cheese chip dip on a tortilla nice and thin.
Place a second tortilla on top. I use the smaller tortillas from Costco
Place a small spoon full of beans on and spread thin.
                                                               Add shredded cheese
Add your taco seasoned hamburger on top
Fold up however you see fit and enjoy!
I used all of the ingredients from our food storage, so
keep in mind you don't have to just eat rice and canned
                                                                   vegetables.

Being prepared. Mini 72 hour bag and first aid kit

Growing up my mother taught me to hope for the best and prepare for the worse. So I want to share a bit of preparedness today.

My husband bought me a small bag for Christmas and I love how perfect it is for my mini 72 hour kit/First aid kit for my purse.

It looks so small, right? Wait until you see how much stuff fits inside! And yes, it's from the Hunger Games. It is my favorite movie and book series as it shows the importance of being prepared. It even mentions in the last book about the people who had stocked up on food when the shortages had begun. It also shows that having even a single item can aid in survival.

Now I know we don't live in a broken down society, but we do get stranded on the sides of roads, lose jobs, get hurt while away from home, and deal with nature and it's disasters.

So here is what I managed to pack inside without too much effort. I am still looking around for a few more things to add in there.

Some people think I'm paranoid to keep things like this in my purse.  You never know when you may get a scratch or worse. I stepped on a carpet cutters blade when we moved into our home about 1 1/2 years ago. They put in our carpet and left the blade out on the front walkway. I was barefoot and it went through the bottom of my foot. I went into shock and ripped it out myself. It was a good thing my mother (a nurse) and 2 people were helping us move, both were doctors, or I could have been sitting out front with a split open foot on my own. I would have been happy to have had this kit on hand. Everyone was scrambling for gauze while I sat in shock on the porch with my newborn baby in her car seat. Thank goodness my toddler was still in her bed or she could have stepped on it. I ended up with 5 stitches and couldn't wear my socks or shoes for weeks, but we were not as prepared as I would have liked.

This is just what I keep in my kit, but you may keep other things. Just think of a few scenarios, even silly ones. Public bathrooms don't always have tp or soap. Kids get cuts and scrapes. Places you go may be germ filled. Just keeping a few extra items on hand may help you out more than you thought.

How much food do I need? Do not short change yourself

I have seen so many articles flying around Pinterest and Facebook that are teaching the WRONG thing. If you really could fit a years supply of food into a 5 gallon bucket you would need to eat only a tablespoon or so a day. I actually saw this on an article and many people commenting on how easy it is to do, how they can't wait to have a whole years supply in one bucket, and how other people are crazy to keep more food than that. Some saying that you can just keep adding water and making soup stretch further. If you do this and really do need a years supply of food, you are going to starve. Plain and simple. For enough calories to function, you need more than a 5 gallon bucket of soup making materials.

If times are tough for whatever reason, this kind of food will not give you enough energy to do anything. If you survive at all.

So how much food do you really need? Don't get me wrong, you certainly don't need the $3,000 years supply many companies are selling, but you do need enough to function.
Here is a simple way to start.
1 Adult will need:
300 lbs of grain
60 lbs of sugars
13 lbs of fats or oils
60 lbs of beans/legumes
75 lbs of dry milk
Water. As much water as you can.
This seems like a whole lot, but it really is not when you think about the fact that that would feed you for an entire YEAR. Many different items can fall under each category and you can supplement with what you like. But do not think that you can fit a whole years supply in a bucket. Now don't think you have to shop at specialty stores to get these items. I took this photo, with permission from employees, of the food storage section at my local Walmart. Yup. Walmart sells food storage. Buckets, #10 cans and more! Plus they are cheaper than most places.
So to get started the hard white wheat is only around $14 per bucket. Grab one each month and you will have enough wheat to grind into flour in no time. Plus the buckets are ready to store.

Do you shop places like costco? They have 25 lb bags of rice (yup, it's a grain) for only about $8. So for only $32 or so you have 100 lbs of grain.

Be sure when you shop that you get stuff you already like. Do NOT make the biggest mistake of thinking " If I'm hungry enough, I will eat it"

The basic food supply listed above will make enough bread for you to eat for a year, but why stick to plain bread? I will touch more on the subject of variation, but just be sure you plan for enough. Children under 7 will eat about half of an adult, so you can plan accordingly. Keep food storage in a cool dry place.

Home and personal safety tips for uncertain times

So I just want to touch on this subject really quick, how does everyone feel about self defense weapons? It is very important not only for your family safety, but also important as times get tough and people look for easy targets. This is why it is important not to share with everyone about your food storage/stockpile.
But think for a moment, would you be protected if someone decided to break in? There are many things you can do to start.

1. Have multiple self defense weapons and items. This can be many things, not just guns. There is pepper spray, knives, stun gun, swords, bow and arrows, cross bows, brass knuckles, and so on. Be sure to check what is legal in your state and that you are trained well enough to use them. Don't rely on last minute panic to try and figure out how to use it. Make sure you have any necessary permits.

2. Have them everywhere you can access. Not just in one place. Do you have something on each floor or in each area of the house? Keep out of reach of children, but easy enough access that you can grab it if someone came through your door.

3. Have home defenses set up to make people avoid you. Keep doors shut to all rooms when anyone comes (repair guy, visitors, sales people) even opening the door can show people what is inside. You may not see it as valuable, but someone else could.
We found some window cling that makes the door a 1 way mirror. It is really hard to see inside, but from inside we can see everything outside.

4. Check out pinterest for ideas. I found a bar that attaches across the door to keep people from picking the lock or knocking down the door (of course if you are home) to stop home invasions. You can buy parts at the hardware store. A metal bar and a few brackets secured to the wall should hold the door from being pushed inward.

5. Always be careful about what you put outside. If you buy anything with a name on the box (food storage, toys, diapers, wipes, electronics.... so on) make sure to cut up the box small enough to fit in the garbage can or recycle bin. You don't want to advertize what you have in the house. You never know what someone could want or need that they may see you as an easy target.

6. Do a walk through each night. Check all doors and windows. Make sure everything is locked tight. Alarms set.

7. Speaking of Alarms. Do you know the dollar store has door and window alarms? They go off and are extremely loud when opened. This will give you a heads up if someone comes in. Make sure every door and window has them.

8. Have you looked outside recently? Is there a bush that has overgrown that someone could hide in? Is there a tree growing close to the house someone could climb to get on the roof? You can trim things up to keep someone from having easy foot holds. Just keeping things straight and uniform can help.

9. Do you have lights outside? If so, make sure they are on every night and that they are functioning properly. Install motion sensor lights if possible.

10. Do you know your neighbors? You should become acquainted, if possible, with at least one set of neighbors. They can help tell you if there is suspicious activity.

Stay safe out there everyone. I see more and more in the news that there are home invasions and robberies going on. Also be sure and be aware of the situation.
A few questions you need to ask yourself before you go home.

1. Is that car following you? Make a few random turns in a row. Are they still there? Don't think it's paranoia. Yes, I have been followed before. I pulled into the parking lot of a police station and they took off, speeding away. Yes, I believe they were looking to follow me home.
If you are followed be sure to keep going. DO NOT go home. This will let them know where you are and you are now trapped. Keep driving, go somewhere public and well lit. Go to the authorities if possible.

2. Is that person following you? Are you going to your car or walking somewhere and feel like you are being followed? This has also happened to me and it is a very scary feeling. Do NOT allow yourself to be a victim.
Personally I had just had my first child and had left her in the car with my mother. She watched a very dirty, scruffy man cross the parking lot following me to the store, but was unsure if he was just going into the store himself. He stood outside the door watching me go in but never went inside the store himself. I came to the door and felt like I should go back inside. I did and My mother saw him pacing looking in at me. She pulled the car up and he backed away but kept looking into the store at me. She honked at me and the man backed further away but never let me out of his sight. I got to the car and jumped in and locked the doors. He immediately turned and left without ever entering the store. I knew he was watching me and had I been by myself he may have gotten to me. There was no one in the store other than me and the employee at the front as it was a late evening. I now carry self defense items to be sure I am armed if someone does try to hurt myself or my family.

Do NOT be a victim. I repeat. DO NOT. Be aware and do not think it's paranoia. I make sure we do our walk through every day, I carry items to keep myself safe, I am aware of the people around me and potentially bad situations.
