Food storage: Where do I start?

Food storage is something that people have done for hundreds of years. The art of preserving foods in time of plenty for the lean times. But everyone keeps asking me, where do I start? People get overwhelmed at the thought of a 3 month food supply working towards a year supply for everyone in the house. Some are so put off by it that they just quit.

Here is a simple way to start. This week buy one extra item. We use coupons to help us do more than we ever could along with sale cycles for the season. Be sure and put these items in a tote/closet or somewhere away from where your every day food items are. You want to rotate and use old items first as you buy, but you want to be able to remember to buy your regular food as normal and food storage is added on. Do not stop buying an item you normally do because it's in the food storage. This will defeat the purpose.

September
Week 1:Salt. Iodized if possible. Salt has a VERY long shelf life (30+ years if stored correctly) Buy 2 small containers, more if possible as always, but let's start small.

Non food item: Toilet paper. A small pack of toilet paper. I purchased this brand because there was a sale for 50% off. It cost $1.80. Be sure and store the = larger rolls. These take up less space than small regular rolls and usually cost less per roll. If you can find it for .21 or less per equivalent roll, stock up.

Albertsons is going to have the 12 rolls=24 rolls for only $3.77 this week as a one day daily deal. Thanks Queen bee coupons!

We are going to start slow and sensible. If you go out and buy 100 lbs of wheat, would you know what to do with it?  We want food stored that everyone is used to eating and will like.

Taking a simple step forward for our future

I have struggled with deleting my old blog as I met many nice people while trying to help other save money. Turned out that the blogging community could be very competitive and I was not in it for money, so I stopped so I could have time to raise my children and take care of my household. I have decided to start up a new blog as sharing on facebook only helps so much. I think I bother people talking about this all the time, but I really want to help others live like ourselves.

I am working towards being an Urban Homesteader. Those unfamiliar with the term, basically it's a person living in the city who wants to be self sufficient. I would like to share my journey towards it with you and share tips on things like 72 hour kits, food storage and stockpiling. I don't mean the crazy kind where you go nuts thinking the world is ending, but the easy to use kind that will help you have what you need in any kind of emergency.

What is an emergency? Most people automatically jump to things like tornado, hurricane and things like that. But have you thought of job loss, power outages in the winter, a cut in funds or something coming up like car repairs that can take from what you need to live on. Are you debt free? There are many things that can affect the way you live, and I want to help you become sufficient and skilled enough to be ready for anything.

I am not a professional by any means. I'm just a 23 year old Mom of 2 with my Husband and my Mother. I work every day towards our food storage and want to help others like us who want to take the right steps.

That being said I hope I can help others out there be ready. We are considered "Preppers" at this point, but I would also love the homesteading.
